The Leon County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crime Unit is comprised of a Lieutenant, Sergeant, eight Detectives, and one Secretary.
The Violent Crime Unit works a wide variety cases, from Harassing Phone Calls, Child Abuse, Sex Crimes, Robberies, and Homicides. In 2007 the Violent Crime Unit worked over 1,641 cases and cleared 1487 cases, which is 91% clearance rate.
The Violent Crime Unit works closely with other units within the Sheriff’s Office, and several outside the agency, including the Medical Examiner’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Florida Department of Children and Families, Child Protection Team, FBI, and ATF.
Within the unit, there are two Detectives who are members of the Florida Gang Investigators Association. The Florida Gang Investigator’s Association promotes and facilitates the exchange of gang intelligence and information among those professionals actively involved in the investigation and prosecution of criminal street gangs, prison gangs, extremist groups, supremacist groups and their membership.
There are two Detectives who are Certified Fraud Examiners and members of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Certified Fraud Examiners are recognized world wide. To become a CFE, one must pass a rigorous examination administered by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), meet specific education and professional requirements, exemplify the highest moral and ethical standards. Even in Violent Crimes, the training and resources of a CFE are utilized.
The Violent Crimes Unit is a shining example of dedication and teamwork. This is further demonstrated by the fact that a majority of the unit has secondary positions within the agency by being members of specialized units such as SWAT, Hostage Negotiation Team, and Honor Guard.
